L’OTUS Cake Boutique

Mille crêpe cake seems to be the current dessert trend in Vancouver. Recently, there are three stores, with a similar concept, that caught my attention – L’OTUS Cake Boutique, Sugar Lab, and Miss Lina Crêpe Cake. Therefore, my friends and I plan to go for a crêpe cakes hunt to see which one is the best. And the first location would be L’OTUS Cake Boutique.

It is a famous dessert cafe in Richmond. They are known for the freshly made mille crêpe cake, as well as for serving tea espresso-based beverages. I previously went there 3 times, and they were sold out of cakes. So this time, we reserved a table of four and some cakes to start off. We went there around 3 pm on a weekday, so most of the flavours were still in stock. And we ordered four flavours in total – Fresh Strawberry, Blue Earl Grey, 64% Dark Chocolate, and Black Sesame.

Fresh Strawberry | $8.50

I was amazed that the cake is filled with layers of fresh strawberries and cream, which makes a perfect balance of sweet/sourness. The crêpe is rather moist and light, compared to other flavours. The sliced strawberries also provide an additional texture to the cake. Overall, this is probably my favourite flavour of all. – 4.5/5

Blue Earl Grey | $8.50

This unique flavour attracts many people to come all the way to try it, and I guess we were no exception. My girlfriend loves the subtle flavour of it, so she ended up finishing it. Unfortunately, it was not my cup of “tea”, because I found that the crêpe is on a dryer and heavier side, due to the lack of cream. And maybe, I personally was never a big fan of earl grey. – 3/5

64% Dark Chocolate | $9.50

If you love dark chocolate, then you would probably like this one. It is layered with chocolate cream, which gives a very rich chocolaty flavour to it. I love how the cake has that hint of bittersweetness on every bite. But I have to be honest, it is quite heavy after half the slice, especially since we are eating four slices haha! – 4/5

Black Sesame | $9.50

My other friend got attracted because of this Totoro-faced cake. It looks photogenic, but we all agreed that the black sesame flavour is too subtle that we can barely taste it. There is also a hint of bitterness from the over-roasted black sesame. I always think that black sesame dessert is very hard to master because there are too many flavours to worry about. – 2/5

Overall, it is a decent dessert adventure. It is highly recommended to reserve both cakes and tables to prevent any disappointment. Mille crêpe cakes are quite pricey, so I might come back again for their non-crêpe desserts.
