Yes, I just returned from my month-long vacation in Hong Kong, Korea, and Taiwan, so I finally have time to sit down and consolidate a list of must-try food spots for you all. Hong Kong is known as a food paradise, yet as a local, I’ve found food in Hong Kong to be pretty mediocre. It can get quite expensive compared to other cities, including Vancouver! So on this trip, I spent more time digging through hidden gems to share with you all.

The list contains foods from my childhood that I visit every time I return to Hong Kong.

#1: McWings & McCafe (McDonald’s)

Yup, you did not read it wrong. My first recommendation for Hong Kong is McDonald’sMcCafe & McWings. This is my childhood memory, and I think the quality remains, so don’t miss out! Unlike McDonald’s in Canada, the ones in Hong Kong are more creative, often introducing new items to the menu. The seasonal drink – Ovaltine Crunchy Latte – is my new favorite. The sweetness was subtle, and the Ovaltine crumbs added a pleasing crispy texture to the drink. If you are looking for a different option, the Hazelnut Latte is my all-time favorite. Please don’t forget to try the McWings, which are only available in Asia! Make sure to dip them in the spicy Thai sauce to give it some heat!

#2: Goobne Chicken

More chicken! This time it is Korean oven-roasted chicken from Goobne Chicken. The restaurant chain stretches over 1,000 franchises in Korea, and it is known to use a healthy way of roasting its chicken to ensure low trans-fat and calories. We ordered the Goobne Original and Grapefruit Makgeolli /1.2% (HKD150) during our visit. I would say the portion size is more than enough for two people. The chicken was tender with crispy skin, despite being oven-roasted. I liked to dip it in the provided sauce because it was somewhat bland on its own. The drink was very refreshing, and it had a mild flavor of makgeolli – I love it!

#3: Holam Bakery

If you are looking for some inexpensive Mille crepes, this is the right place. It is a hidden gem in Kwun Tong – Holam Bakery. All cakes are freshly made daily with over ten flavors to choose from. I ordered a Purple Yam Mille Crepe, and it was light and delicious. The crepe was layered with purple yam cream and bite-sized pieces of purple yam, which gave it a strong flavor. Compared to the mille crepes I’ve tried in Vancouver, its sweetness was fairly subtle. This shop offers an assortment of unique flavors, including Ovaltine Lava, Cookie & Cream, Honey, Taro, and more. I will return for more!

#4: SHARI SHARI Kakigori House

This was my first taste of Japanese shaved ice (Kakigori), and SHARI SHARI Kakigori House gave me a delightful experience. We ordered Earl Grey Milk Tea Kakigori. It looked normal from the outside but had unexpected biscuit crumbs and Hokkaido milk pudding inside the shaved ice. We loved how the crumbs give it a crunchy texture, but I found the pudding to be quite bland. The shaved ice itself had a strong earl grey flavor.  As you munch it down, the flavor did not get watered down. FYI the shop is quite small, so I would recommend you visit with a smaller group and prepare for a short wait.

#5: Zi

This hidden gem is tucked away in a building in Tsim Sha Tsui. Apparently, there are two cafes in TST that are both called “Zi”, but the one I tried is “Zi ?“. The interior has a minimalist design and the ambiance is quiet and comfortable. They serve unique desserts and drinks, which attracted me in the first place. One of the drinks I recommend is the Marshmallow Matcha Latte. The marshmallows just melted in my mouth. The sweetness of the roasted marshmallows balanced out the bitterness of the matcha. The Bamboo Charcoal Waffle with Rice Krispies, Honey, and Ice Cream was another dessert we ordered. Although we enjoyed it, my friend and I both agreed that it would taste better without the honey. The flavor was too strong and didn’t match the dessert. The waffles were otherwise freshly made and paired with toppings that I loved. Overall, I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a quiet place to catch up with friends.
