Marutama Gaiden

Ramen is the perfect comfort food during a rainy day, and I was invited to try the newest creation at Marutama Gaiden, a spin-off ramen joint of Marutama Ramen located on Main Street. Here, you can experience some unique menu items that are not served in other locations. You also have the opportunity to try the thick noodles and various soup base, instead of the chicken creamy broth solely. The feature item on the menu is spicy ramen with a twist using Sichuan hot chili peppers.

R.H.C.P. Ramen, also known as Red Hot Chili Peppers Ramen, is now available only at the Marutama Gaiden location. Using three types of peppers, chili, black, and Sichuan, it creates an addictive spiciness to the ramen. It is offered in three levels of spiciness. Though I only try the first (regular spicy) level, it is quite spicy for me. The heat kicks in as an aftertaste. It starts to numb my tongue, but I really enjoy this type of spice. It is pungent, yet enjoyable.

It uses thick noodles, which absorb the spiciness and the flavor of the broth. It then pairs with shredded pork, and it was surprisingly tender. I would not mind to have it as an add-on topping for other ramen. Cilantro and carrots add an earthy flavor to the broth, but some might not like the excessive amount of cilantro in the bowl.

Overall Impression

As a first experience in this ramen joint, I really enjoy the spicy ramen. Especially with the use of thick noodles, it absorbs the soup broth and enriches the overall flavor. However, comparing to Marutama Gaiden, I like the original Marutama ramen more, because of its simplicity and light flavour. I would recommend Gaiden if you are looking for a heavier flavor and something different than the usual ramen.
