To escape from the crowd and the expensive Valentine’s Day dinner, we decided to have a lunch at Nightingale on the weekend instead. There are few reasons for us to choose this restaurant:

  1. I really enjoyed my first visit with my coworkers.
  2. This is opened by David Hawksworth, who also owns my most favourite restaurant in Vancouver, Hawksworth Restaurant.
  3. We saw roasted bone marrow on the menu!

Nightingale may have a subtle storefront, but it has a classy and spacious interior. At first I was very surprised that there are two floors. Unlike Hawksworth, Nightingale features a casual menu, with a large selection of vegetarian options. In addition, there are pizza and shared plates, which allows customers to enjoy the meal with limitless options.

We ordered few dishes – the Roasted Bone Marrow (of course!) to share; he ordered a spaghetti with clams, and I ordered a duck lasagna. Last but not least, a Sticky Toffee Pudding to conclude the meal.

It is rare to find Roasted Bone Marrow in Vancouver restaurants, so we were super excited to try it! And it did not disappoint us. This dish requires some patience, as it takes an extra 15 to 20 minutes to prepare. So be prepare to have enough time if you want to try this dish.

Roasted Bone Marrow / anchovy aioli, parsley & shallot salad, baguette / $24

Two roasted bone marrows were served on the plate, with parsley & shallot salad and toasted baguettes. The bone marrows are unctuous, rich, and irresistible. I spread the marrow on the baguette – the baguette adds a texture to the marrow, which pairs perfectly well. I also like enjoying a small scoop of marrow alone that instantly melts in my mouth. This dish is reasonably priced, and it is now going to my must-order list.

Spaghetti / manila clam, jalapeno, scallion, white wine / $22 (L)

This is my second time ordering the spaghetti with generous amount of manila clams. I love how the jalapeno spices up this dish. The dish is simple, but delicious! This dish comes in two sizes, and I highly recommend to order the bigger size for a regular meal.

Duck Lasagna / black kale, caciocavallo cheese, fried sage / $26

Duck lasagna is on the saltier side, but I enjoy the touch of black kale and fried sage in the dish. The fried sage is surprisingly delicious – crispy and addicting. Can I have a bowl of this on the side please? I rarely eat lasagna, because it is greasy and heavy. This dish is not super greasy or heavy, so it was okay. However, as the duck is minced, I would not know if it is duck if I did not read from the menu.

Sticky Toffee Pudding / candied pecan, bourbon butterscotch, maple ice cream / $12

Last but not least, we must order a dessert to conclude our post-Valentine’s lunch – Sticky Toffee Pudding. I have never tried this before, just because it doesn’t sound appetizing. But it is a satisfying dessert! It is served with candied pecan, bourbon butterscotch, with a scoop of maple ice cream. I don’t know what the classic one should look like, but this is delectable. Dipping the cake into the butterscotch, chase with a spoon of maple ice cream DAMN! The cake itself is not too sweet, and I like the crunch from the candied pecan. The portion is quite large, so it is just perfect to share.

Overall Impression

I really enjoy my dining experience at Nightingale. Ambiance, service, and food quality are all at top-notch. As they serve the same menu for both lunch and dinner, I would recommend to go during lunch time. It is quieter and less packed. If you are looking for a fancy restaurant with a reasonable price, this would be the place to go. By the way, you have to order the Buttermilk Fried Chicken – trust me, you would not be disappointed.
