2nd Annual Crab Festival at Water St. Cafe

Water St. Cafe is a well-known restaurant in Gastown, right across the Gastown Steam Clock. With the elegant ambiance and delectable food, it attracts locals and tourists to pay a visit. Last weekend, my friend, David invited me to try the dishes for their 2nd Annual Crab Festival. From now until July 1, 2019, you can get your hands the freshest BC Dungeness Crab through the feature menu for brunch, lunch, and dinner.

We started the meal with a house made cocktail, Eye Opener. It is made with mint, berries, and sparkling wine. This is an off-menu item, but it is refreshing and just the perfect beverage for the hot weather.

BC Dungeness Crab Bisque / creme fraiche, chive oil / $12

The meal continues with the BC Dungeness Crab Bisque, with crème fraîche and chive oil. The bisque is overloaded with crab meat, and I love how it is not overly seasoned.

West Coast Crab Cakes / pacific rock crab, baby shrimp, preserved citrus, fennel, saffron aioli, arugula / $15

West Coast Crab Cakes are also one of my favourite. It is classic, but the chef made a tweak by using saffron aioli, as well as adding a citrus flavor to the dish. The outer shell is crispy, with (again!) overloaded amount of crab meat in the centre. I highly recommend to try this dish.

Crab Napoleon / handpicked BC Dungeness crab, whipped avocado, asian soy ginger vinegar dressing / $23.50

Next up is a slightly different dish, Crab Napoleon. Between layers of puff pastry, it has crab meat and whipped avocado. The dish is then finished with an Asian soy ginger vinegar dressing. I would imagine to the dish is warm, but it is actually a cold dish. It is an interesting combo, but I am not a huge fan of avocado.

BC Dungeness Crab Club Salad / 1/2 BC Dungeness crab, crispy bacon lardons, avocado, iceberg lettuce wedge, buttermilk dressing / $33.75

Lastly, we also tried the BC Dungeness Crab Club Salad. I was surprised to see half of the crab laying on the plate, along with the iceberg lettuce and avocado. I prefer seeing the salad prepared and ready, rather than getting my hands dirty. It could be fun, but troublesome at the same time, when trying to get the meat out the shell.

Overall Impression

I enjoyed the dishes, and the Crab Bisque and Crab Cakes are my favourite. During this time, guests can still order from the regular menu. So it would be nice to try different dishes. The service is great; however, I noticed that there are quite a bit of fruit flies in the restaurant for my past visits (including this one). Though the restaurant is modest, I think the cleanliness of the restaurant would be my main concern.
