likebyregina We are always on an adventure to find delicious xiao long bao. And recently, my friend told us about this Shanghainese restaurant on Kingsway, across from Superstore in Metrotown. The restaurant has a funny name, Colour See See. We always pass by this place, but we never tried it. Unlike other restaurants, they only serve buns and dumplings. It is fairly spacious, with an open-kitchen concept. You can watch them making the dumplings fresh from outside. But I have to warn you all that I highly DO NOT recommend visiting during busy hours.
We visited the restaurant on a Saturday afternoon, around 4 pm. There were no other customers, except us. We ordered an order of xiao long bao (XLB) and sheng jian bao (SJB) to share. We waited for around 10 minutes, and both orders arrived. The server also brings us some vinegar for the soup dumplings.
We first tried the Xiao Long Bao, and each order comes with 6 pieces. The skin is on a thicker side, so it is easily picked up by our poor chopstick skills. The soup inside is steaming hot and flavorful. The proportion of meat filling is perfect. I think the soup inside the XLB is worth mentioning. It is fattier than other XLBs I tried, and it is flavourful as if it absorbs all the flavour from the filling.
If you order XLB and SJB at the same time, don’t forget to eat Sheng Jian Bao when they are still fresh and hot. Each order of SJB comes with 4 pieces, sprinkled with black sesame on them. The crust is the best one I tried so far in Vancouver – crispy! It is then paired with a soft bun and flavourful meat filling. There are different textures when you bite through the bun. Be careful of the soup inside the SJB as it might burn your tongue.
We went back one week later during dinner time, and we almost waited for 30 to 40 minutes for our soup dumplings. So I have to warn you guys – if you guys are looking for a quick meal, this is not where you want to be. Save it for the non-rush hour to try! Don’t let the wait time kill your mood.
Overall Impression
Colour See See is such a hidden gem. You might pass by it all the time without noticing it, but I think it is definitely worth checking it out. I think SJB is my favourite here because of its golden crust. The price is on the pricier side, but I think it is reasonable as they are made fresh, with premium quality. However, as it is a small family business, I will probably only visit them when they don’t have many customers in the store. It is a convenient restaurant that can easily satisfy my XLB craving!
