Old Street Crepe: Chinese Crepe & Unique Chinese Desserts

A few weeks ago, I made my first visit to Old Street Crepe, featuring Chinese crepes, Taiwanese beef noodles, as well as traditional Chinese desserts that are rarely found in Vancouver. It is located in Burnaby, just a 5-minute walk across from Metrotown. When I was there for a media tasting, there is an on-going promotion where you can get 50% off if you share a photo on Instagram and tag @oldstreetcrepe.

We started our meal with two new drinks on the menu, including the Fresh Fruit Tea and the Bubble Fresh Fruit Tea. The fresh fruit tea is very sugary. Though it has slices of strawberries, orange, and passionfruit, there aren’t many fresh fruits in the drink. Conversely, the bubble fresh fruit tea is better, as it is carbonated and less sweet. The drink looks more appealing, but there aren’t many fruits in the drink either.

Other new items on the menu include Curry Pork Chops on Rice and Braised Beef Brisket on Rice. The main dishes took 40 minutes to prepare, so if you are in a hurry, I would not recommend ordering these dishes. The Braised Beef Brisket on Rice is decent, as the beef brisket is tender. But the rice is undercooked, and I think the sauce should not be poured on to the rice.

The Curry Pork Chops on Rice doesn’t taste as good. The pork cutlets are placed with the curry, which turns out soggy when it arrived. The curry is bland and watery, so it is not quite appetizing.

Animal Style Fries come next, and it is fries covered with cheese and thousand island salad dressing. The cheese is not melted with icy cold salad dressing, which makes it a weird and heavy combination.

Of course, we have to end our meal with some desserts, which is also the part where I look forward to the most. We tried the Deep Fried Fresh Taro Balls, Deep Fried Fresh Milk, and Deep Fried Sweet Potato Balls.

The Deep Fried Fresh Taro Balls come in 3 flavors, and I tried the Egg Yolk & Pork Floss and the Red Bean. They also serve with cheese, if you are looking for a savory treat. The taro balls are deep-fried beautifully, with a light batter on the outside. The taro is soft, with a perfect amount of filling. I personally prefer the Egg Yolk & Pork Floss. It is a unique combination, and it tastes not as heavy as the red bean one.

The Deep Fried Sweet Potato Balls come with a red bean filling, and it is not as mocha-like as I would imagine. Sweet potato flavor is subtle, as the red bean filling overpowers it. So I would have to pass on this one.

Lastly, I highly recommend trying the Deep Fried Fresh Milk. It is difficult to find anywhere else in Vancouver, and they taste delicious. It is fresh and steaming hot. The milk is in a custard form, where it has a contrasting texture with a crispy shell.

Overall Impression

I didn’t get to the signature Chinese crepes this time but based on the service and food provided, I may have second thoughts of coming here for a full meal. I would definitely return for their desserts because they are the most delicious. They are also difficult to find in Vancouver, especially the Deep Fried Fresh Milk. Price is reasonable, so if you are in the area and are looking for a quick snack, why not?
