[REVISIT] Hon’s Wonton House (Olympic Village)

Do you remember when was your last time eating at Hon’s Wonton House? My last dining experience with them was when I first came to Vancouver 10 years ago. I still remembered they used to have a huge menu, with almost everything you can possibly name. Recently, I had a chance to revisit Hon’s Wonton House after 10 years, but everything has now changed. The new restaurant, located in Olympic Village, became more modern, with a simpler menu. But one thing remains –  handmade wontons.

I believe this is my first time to revisit my blog post and change my comments on the food quality and restaurant. I revisited the restaurant last night, and I ordered Popstickers and Beef Brisket & Wonton Noodle Soup. Unfortunately, I was disappointed on the food quality this time!

One of my favourite appetizers was the Potstickers™. The dumpling skin was thin, with a generous amount of juicy pork filling. They were then pan fried to add a crispy bottom shell to the dumplings. If I were to change to one thing, it would be the dipping sauce. The sauce was like water-down red vinegar with ginger. I wish they use a sauce with stronger acidity to balance its saltiness.

Real Dining Experience:

Sadly, when I ordered this again last night, the Popstickers were soggy and clearly not fresh. They were not crispy, instead they tasted like pre-pan-fried dumplings that sat there all night! We were super disappointed.

Seasonal Veggie with Oyster Sauce

This dish may look simple, but it was traditional and difficult to excel. They used Chinese broccoli (Gai Lan) as the night’s seasonal veggie. They have a crunchy stem, so they can be easily overcooked. So I was amazed how they can cook the vegetables thoroughly, while maintaining the crunchiness and the beautiful, bright color.

BBQ Pork

Another classic and must-try at Hon’s! The best BBQ pork should have both lean and fat meat, so the texture would not be too rough or oily. The sauce was lightly coated on the pork, which had a hint of sweetness. What can beat this?

Curry Fish Balls

They taste better when they were made into skewers using chopsticks! They are filled with childhood memories, and I just can’t get enough of them. Can I have another bowl please?

Beef Brisket & Wonton Noodle Soup

After trying all the appetizers, it was time for the main dish – handmade wontons! I was so excited, because it was rare to find delicious wontons in Vancouver. Now, you know where to go! Beef brisket was tender, and the noodles were chewy. According to the chef, the portion for this event was only 1/4 of the original size. I would definitely come back and try this noodle soup again!

Real Dining Experience:

The beef brisket was chewy, and it was not even close to being tender. To be honest, I felt tricked once again of how different the quality was from the media event to real dining experience. Wontons were okay, but I can definitely taste some fat pork being mixed with the prawns in the fillings.

Overall Impression

Although Hon’s Wonton House changed its overall vibe and menu, after my revisit after the media event, I was disappointed that the food quality was not maintained. It did turn cleaner and more organized, compared to before, but I am not sure if I will return again as a real customer.
