Are you sick of the regular breakfast with sunny-side up eggs, bacon, and toast? What about trying an authentic experience Chinese breakfast? Lu Charcoal Grill in Richmond serves a Tianjin-style breakfast, and some of the famous items would be Jian Bing (also known as Chinese crêpes), Scallion Pancake, Tea Eggs, and Handmade Wonton, etc.

Lu Charcoal Grill serves breakfast from 9:30AM to 4:30PM, so for anyone that wakes up at 2PM and can never catch the breakfast items, don’t worry! They got your back. There are multiple combos that range from $6.95 to $9.50. One of my favourite combo would definitely be Combo #3 ($6.95), which includes Chinese Crêpe, Soy Milk, and two Tea Eggs. The portion is generous, and it is very filling! If you do not like their combo, or thinking the combo is too much for you, you may want to order the items separately.

What is Jian Bing?

Jian Bing is also known as Chinese Breakfast Crêpe or Jiangbing Guozi, which is one of China’s most popular street breakfast. It is known in Tianjing, a major city in northeastern China. It is always made fresh, and it is easy to eat as you are rushing to work. Though it is high-calorie, it is filling and nutritious, which is what the Chinese needs to prepare for their long hours of work. It is made with a flour batter, eggs, and sauces, and you can customize it by adding scallions, coriander, sausages, and meat, based on your personal preference.

Tea Eggs are my favorite breakfast item on the menu, as they are rare to see in restaurants or even on the streets nowadays. Boiled eggs are soaked in Chinese spices, soy sauce, and black tea leaves for hours. Once they are done, the eggs would have a marble-like pattern on them. It has a strong aroma of tea, and again it is another famous eat-as-you-go snack in China.

Overall, I love the authenticity and uniqueness of the food here. They are inexpensive and filling. I would not say they are the best I have tried, but these food are definitely some of my childhood memories. Tianjing-style breakfast is more flavorful, heavy, and filling because students and adults in China often have long hours of school and work, so a quick and big breakfast is needed every morning. Unlike Vancouver, we often have time to sit down to enjoy brunch, but why not try something different today?
