Every year, I would choose a different place to order a cake for my mom’s birthday, and this year, I chose 812 Cake & Dessert. I came here with my friends before, when they first opened. We ordered most of the flavors in the shelf, so I thought my mom would love this place as well. 812 Cake & Dessert is a Korean-owned cake shop near Gilmore. Their cakes overall are on a lighter side, and they have a large variety of beverage selections.
During my first visit, we ordered Tiramisu, Blueberry Cheese, Sweet Potato, and Salted Caramel. Flavors come in a rotational basis, so I am sure you will never get bored of the cakes here. As for the second visit, I ordered Strawberry for my mom’s birthday cake.
Tiramisu
It is beautifully layered with mascarpone and sponge cake. The cream itself is very light, and the cake is not overly sweet. However, I found the cake is lack of the strong espresso flavor, which I am slightly disappointed. I personally still prefer the traditional Tiramisu, where lady fingers are used instead.
Sweet Potato
I have never tried sweet potato cakes before, and the texture is very unique. The sweet potato is very subtle, but the cake has a creamy texture. I would describe this texture to be “frozen cheesecake”. There are bites of sweet potato in the cake as well. I was hoping to be slightly sweeter, but overall this is an unique experience.
Salted Caramel
I did not get to try this cake, but all my friends said that this one is their favourite of all, so I guess this is a must try. But hey, look at the beautiful layers of salted caramel cream and sponge cakes! I would definitely come back for this little one!
Blueberry Cheese
We also chose something simpler, and I think this is slightly bland. I hope the blueberry compote would bring more sweetness or fruitiness to the cake. The texture is fabulous – creamy but not too heavy. The crust is definitely a good add-on to the cake.
Strawberry Birthday Cake
I was very surprised to see such a beautifully decorated cake, and the cake is layered with a generous amount of fresh strawberries. The sponge cake is airy and light. The cream is not overly sweet nor heavy. My mom and my brother love the cake a lot. I would say it is totally worth the price!
Overall, I had pretty good experience from this tiny cake shop. I love how the cakes are on a lighter side and not too sweet. In addition, the owners are very nice, and I can feel the amount of love and effort that they put in their cakes. The shop is quite small, so I recommend to come it smaller group or order take out! I would definitely come back and try other cakes.
