I recently consolidated a list of restaurants that I want to visit in the near future with other foodies, and Sweetery Cafe + Desserts is one of them. Last Saturday, Jan and I decided to go to this hidden gem for a brunch date. The cafe was spacious and cozy, decorated with wooden furniture. The brunch menu is served on weekends from 8am to 2:30pm. We chose two dishes to share – Chicken & Waffles and Cajun Crabcake Benny.
Cajun Crabcake Benny
The soft poached eggs were cooked to perfection. I was satisfied to see the runny yolk when I cut through the egg. Cajun added some heat to the crab cakes, which made the dish more appetizing. The hash had a crispy shell, yet there was barely any seasoning on it. We even doubted that if the hash was made with potatoes, as it didn’t taste like one.
Chicken & Waffles
The chicken was tender, with a crispy shell. Although we took our time to take pictures, the chicken remained hot and fresh. On the contrary, we were hoping that the waffles were airier and softer in the inside, while the shell remains crispy. This will enhance the dish’s overall texture. The chili maple butter was new to me, as the subtle sweetness worked perfectly in the butter.
Overall Impression
As the cafe is located in a quiet neighborhood, it is suitable to work and hang out with friends during the weekdays. If you are looking into brunch dates with friends, weekends can get busy sometimes. With the reasonable price and quality food, I think Sweetery Cafe + Desserts is better than some hyped brunch places in Vancouver. I would definitely return to try other dishes on the menu.
