Mr. Mustache Tea & Dessert: Bento Box and Oolong Tea Macchiato

It is difficult to look for a cafe that opens until midnight in Vancouver, but if you are in the Burnaby or Marpole area, I have a recommendation for you. Mr. Mustache Tea & Dessert has 2 locations, one on Granville Street and one across Metrotown on Sussex Street. The best thing about the cafe is that it opens until midnight. It is surprised to see how packed it is around 10 pm. Recently, the Burnaby location launched a new dessert, Bento Box, an earl grey cake with fresh pearls on the side.

I usually visit the Burnaby location because it is more spacious and convenient. I would order a Tea Macchiato and chill for a relaxing afternoon. Last weekend, I tried the new dessert, Bento Box. When you open the box, you can see a cute drawing from the server. It is a square-shaped earl grey cake, served with pearls on the side. The cake has a similar texture as the Earl Grey Roll Cake, but I wish it is slightly softer.

I found it weird to have pearls on the side, but the recommended way is to pour the pearls on the cake. If the pearls are coated with brown sugar, I think it would be more interesting. The subtle sweetness from the brown sugar coating would bring out more of the tea flavor.

For drinks, I usually go for the Tea Macchiato. I think I almost tried every flavor on the menu, but Oolong Tea Macchiato is still my favourite. Mr. chose the Strawberry Macchiato, which is a strawberry slush topped with mousse cap. We both enjoyed our drinks, and the mousse cap is one of the best I tried in Vancouver.

Previously I also tried the Earl Grey Roll Cake. The cream is light, with a strong earl grey flavor lingering in my mouth, but again the cake is slightly dry. Otherwise, the cake would be perfect for a late night snack.

Lastly, we ordered the Pistachio. It is a layered cake, with strawberry jam, strawberry mousse, and a pistachio crumble bottom. It is creamy and tart from the strawberry jam. The pistachio flavor is quite subtle, but Mr. said it tastes better if I have a bit of everything in one bite.

Overall Impression

I would say the drinks at Mr. Mustache Tea & Dessert are better than the desserts. After many visits, my favourite is still Oolong Tea Macchiato. I think the Bento Box and Earl Grey Roll Cake are also worth to try, especially if you are craving for a snack to bite on. The cafe is spacious and cozy, so it is quite comfortable to chill or work.
