likebyregina After the last crêpe cakes hunt with L’OTUS Cake Boutique, I am very looking forward to Sugar Lab, a dessert place on Grimmer St in Burnaby. I did some research before I went, and I heard their cakes usually out around 8 pm. So we decided to call and reserve four slices before they were sold out, just like what we did in L’OTUS.
When you entered the shop, you would be attracted by the glass shelf that is full of mille crêpe cake. It is quite spacious and cozy. Not only do they have the signature mille crêpe cake, but they also serve milk tea, slush, shaved ice, pancakes, etc. We arrived at 9 pm, and most of the flavors were still in stock. But as time goes by, a lot of customers come by and ask for takeout. The cafe was not empty for even a second.
So here are the four flavors we ordered: Durian, Taro, Tiramisu, and Matcha. There are also some unique flavors I would like to try next time: Blueberry Cheesecake and Serradura (sadly our tummy was too full for all!).
Durian | $8.95
I was surprised by loads of durian meat between the crêpe layers. Although I do not eat durian, I had a bite. The texture is very soft and moist. My friend loves it so much that she ordered two extra slices as takeout for her family. It is definitely worth ordering! – 5/5
Taro | $8.75
Another slice, but with taro purée instead! I love the idea of using fresh taro to substitute cream to add texture and different types of sweetness to the cake. However, it is on a drier and heavier side, compared to durian. I think it would taste better if more cream is used in this case – 3.5/5
Tiramisu | $8.50
It looks like chocolate, but it is actually a tiramisu cake. A lot of you might know that I love tiramisu, in any form, so if I see this on the menu, I must order it! It is a more chocolaty piece, and I hope that the espresso flavor would be stronger in this case. Otherwise, the cake is not too sweet and remains light and moist! – 4/5
Matcha | $8.50
Matcha is another must-order, especially if you are a matcha lover! They are very generous in adding matcha flavors to the slice. By using matcha cream between layers, the matcha flavor is even stronger! My friends and I all love its bitter-sweetness. – 4.5/5
Overall, I love this dessert cafe, especially since the service is welcoming! That is always a key element for returning customers (well at least for me!). Although mille crêpe cakes are pricey, I would definitely choose this over L’OTUS. And I heard their non-cake desserts are also as good! Make sure to reserve your cakes before you go, so you will not go home empty-stomach/handed.
