BETA 5 x Constellation Inspiration: Cream Puff Collaboration

It was hectic last week because BETA 5 collaborated with Amy from Constellation Inspiration and launched three feature cream puffs. These three new flavors made most Vancouverites go crazy on pre-orders and lineups, just to get their hands on them. But one question always pops up – are they worth the hype? To answer this question, I gave myself an excuse to preorder all three flavors and tried them out.

The new featured cream puffs are inspired by the flavors that Amy grew up eating. They are unique because an Asian-inspired twist is added to a traditional French choux pastry. The flavors are Salted Egg Yolk, Mango Coconut, and Milk Tea + Ube.

Salted Egg Yolk Cream Puff / duck egg yolk custard, mochi, vanilla chantilly / $5

Salted Egg Yolk is most people’s favourite, including myself. It is inspired by a Chinese dim sum, salted egg yolk custard bun (?????). Inside the cream puff, the duck egg yolk custard is wrapped around a mochi. Vanilla chantilly and a macaron are placed on top as decor. It is my favourite of all three, and I think this is so worth the hype and price. It is not overly sweet, with a hint of saltiness from the salted egg yolk. The texture of the mochi gives a similar texture, as if you are eating a real salted egg yolk. Ethan and I both enjoyed it, so we ordered some extras later on the week.

Mango Coconut Cream Puff / mango curd, coconut sago pearls, coconut chantilly / $5

Mango Coconut is inspired by an Asian dessert, mango sago (?????). Mango curd dominates the flavor of the cream puff, which makes it not overly sweet with a good balance of acidity from the mango. I also enjoy the chewy texture from the coconut sago pearls, as if I am drinking the mango sago beverage. However, it lacks the coconut component, though they use coconut chantilly. The flamingo macaron is cute, delicate, and delicious, and it adds a tropical and colorful touch to the finished product.

Milk Tea + Ube Cream Puff / purple sweet potato custard, milk tea mousse, condensed milk sponge / $5

Milk Tea + Ube is my least favourite of all three because the flavor is not as unique and popping compared to the other two. It is inspired by a signature afternoon tea combo in Hong Kong, milk tea & condensed milk toast (?? + ????). Purple yam custard is used as a filling. On top of the cream puff, a milk tea mousse and a condensed milk sponge is covered with purple yam glaze. The milk tea flavor is strong and pungent, which overlay the purple yam flavor. Although there is an after taste from the purple yam custard, it disappears quickly.

Overall Impression

If I would have to rank the three flavor, it would be Salted Egg Yolk, Mango Coconut, and lastly Milk Tea + Ube. I believe this collaboration is worth the hype, and I don’t mind lining up for them again (through I still prefer to preorder online). If you only have money to buy one, then I highly recommend trying the Salted Egg Yolk. I am impressed and surprised with the results of this collaboration, and I am looking forward to see the next one. If you still have not gotten your hands on these feature cream puffs, they will be available until April 12, 2019.
