Top 10 Restaurants to Eat in Hong Kong (Part 1)
Fresh from my month-long adventure across Hong Kong, Korea, and Taiwan, I’m excited to share a curated list of must-try food spots. While Hong Kong is renowned as a food paradise, as a local, I’ve uncovered hidden gems that surpass the typical tourist fare. Join me as I reminisce about childhood favorites and new culinary discoveries!
1: McWings & McCafé (McDonald’s)
Yes, you read that right—McDonald’s tops my list. Specifically, the McCafé & McWings in Hong Kong hold a special place in my heart. Despite its global presence, Hong Kong’s McDonald’s offerings are uniquely inventive, and constantly surprising with new menu additions. One standout is the seasonal Ovaltine Crunchy Latte, a delightful blend of subtle sweetness and crispy Ovaltine crumbs. For a classic choice, the Hazelnut Latte never disappoints. And let’s not forget the exclusive McWings, a savory delight best enjoyed with a dip of spicy Thai sauce for that extra kick!
2. Goobne Chicken
Let’s dive into some Korean oven-roasted chicken goodness from Goobne Chicken! With over 1,000 franchises in Korea, this restaurant chain is renowned for its healthy roasting technique that keeps trans-fat and calories in check. During our visit, we savored the Goobne Original and Grapefruit Makgeolli (HKD150), finding the portion size generous for two. Despite being oven-roasted, the chicken remained tender with a delightful crispy skin. I enjoyed enhancing its flavor with the provided sauce, as it was mildly seasoned on its own. The accompanying drink, Grapefruit Makgeolli, was a refreshing treat with a subtle makgeolli essence that I absolutely loved!

3. Holam Bakery
Discover Holam Bakery, your go-to spot for affordable and delectable Mille crepes in Kwun Tong. This hidden gem boasts a daily selection of freshly made cakes in over ten enticing flavors. I indulged in their Purple Yam Mille Crepe, a light and flavorful delight. Layered with creamy purple yam filling and real purple yam pieces, it delivered a bold taste without overwhelming sweetness, unlike other Mille crepes I’ve sampled in Vancouver. Holam Bakery’s menu is a treasure trove of unique flavors, including Ovaltine Lava, Cookie & Cream, Honey, Taro, and more. I’m already planning my next visit for another delightful experience!

4. SHARI SHARI Kakigori House
My introduction to Japanese shaved ice (Kakigori) at SHARI SHARI Kakigori House left me pleasantly surprised. Opting for the Earl Grey Milk Tea Kakigori, we were treated to a delightful blend of flavors. While its appearance seemed ordinary, the inclusion of unexpected biscuit crumbs and Hokkaido milk pudding inside the shaved ice added a delightful twist. The crunchy texture from the crumbs was a hit, although I found the pudding a bit lacking in flavor. Nevertheless, the shaved ice itself boasted a bold earl grey taste that remained intact until the last bite, without any dilution. Keep in mind that the shop is compact, so it’s best to visit with a smaller group and be prepared for a brief wait.

5. Zi [CLOSED]
Nestled in a building in Tsim Sha Tsui, Zi stands out as a hidden gem among cafes. The minimalist interior design creates a serene and comfortable ambiance, perfect for enjoying their unique desserts and beverages. One standout drink is the Marshmallow Matcha Latte, where the roasted marshmallows delicately complement the matcha’s bitterness. Another must-try is the Bamboo Charcoal Waffle with Rice Krispies, Honey, and Ice Cream, although I found the honey’s strong flavor a bit overwhelming. Despite that, the freshly made waffles and delightful toppings make for a satisfying treat. For a peaceful catch-up with friends, Zi is a top recommendation.
